Etymology[]
Contrary to popular belief, Claymore is not a transliteration of クレイモア (Kureimoa). クレイモア is a transliteration of Claymore.
The English language "claymore" is a transcription of the Scottish-Gaelic "claidheamh mór" (Great Sword), pronounced clave- or glave-mor.
Claymore is the official and original title to the manga series. クレイモア is not found on the copyright page of any Shueisha tankōbon volume, only Claymore.[1] クレイモア is only the super-scripted part of the logo of the Japan and US tankōbon editions.
Description[]
A manga written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi. Genre: fantasy, action, drama.
History[]
Regular Scenes[]
Start date[]
Claymore first appeared in the July 2001 issue of Monthly Shōnen Jump (月刊少年ジャンプ Gekkan Shōnen Janpu). The May 2001 start date, found on most English-language websites, is apocryphal. The May date may be due to the industry practice of actually releasing publications several days ahead of the official release date, the official release date here being 6 June 2001.
In July 2007, the main narrative ceased temporarily (Scene 73), but eventually transferred to the Jump SQ (ジャンプスクエア Janpu Sukuea), starting with the December 2007 issue (Scene 74).
Tankōbon[]
"Scenes" or chapters are first published in book form (tankōbon) under the Shueisha label, beginning with Volume 1 on 5 January 2002. Other language editions follow the Shueisha volumes, using the Japan tankōbon artwork, which in turn often derives from the magazine that Claymore scenes first appear in.
For example, the July 2001 cover of Monthly Shōnen Jump is the basis of all subsequent volume 1 tankōbon jackets and covers.
Extra Scenes[]
During the 5-month, July–November 2007 hiatus, four "Extra Scenes" appeared monthly in the Weekly Shōnen Jump (週刊少年ジャンプ Shūkan Shōnen Janpu). These are gaiden and not part of the main narrative of the series. No regular Claymore chapter appeared in the Weekly Shōnen Jump. Nothing related to Claymore was published by Shueisha in November 2007.
In the May 2012 issue of a Jump SQ spinoff—Jump SQ 19—a Special Scene appeared.[2] This fifth piece is also gaiden. But the main narrative continues to be published in the regular Jump SQ.

Additional details[]
- A collection of color pages and tankōbon cover art is found in the hardcover Memorabilia
- The "2 May" date frequently seen as the release or issue date of Monthly Shōnen Jump, in which Scene 1 makes its debut, is historically the release date of the magazine's June issues
- On reference websites, the "issue" (cover) date of monthly publications (month, year) is often confused with the "release" date (day, month, year), which is the month before the issue month
- Subscribers and distributors of Monthly Shōnen Jump actually received the July 2001 issue during the last week of May 2001–5 June 2001, per standard industry practice
